I received this painting as a gift from an Egyptian store in the Skylon Tower. It is hand painted. I found it closely related to what we are studying in this chapter.
1. Culture in the Paleolithic period was primitive whereas the Neolithic period was more advanced. The Paleolithic culture would look around and find wild crops as they could find them, follow migrating herds to hunt them. The Neolithic period was more technologically advanced where they figured out that they could create farming and grow their own crops, and domesticate animals to use them for help, labor, meat, milk etc.
2. Figure 14.8 Lion Hunt on page 323 is a great depiction of power as the king is shown fighting the most feared animal, the lion. Defeating the lion was viewed as a fitting demonstration of kingly power. Showing a victory of the Upper Egypt forces is Palette of Narmer figure 14.11 on page 325. The display has two fallen enemies and one more about to be pummeled. The placement of the people on the palette represents a balanced stable atmosphere of victory. Hierarchical scale means that the most important figure usually the male is the biggest figure in the work of art. You see this on page 14.14 in the upper right sheet. The women are a paler color and smaller than the main figure, the man.
3. Vase painting had two styles, geometric and red-figure. Geometric style had a flow of events from top to bottom with a funeral ceremony depicted in the upper register, with wasp-waisted mourners at each side, and in the lower register there are foot soldiers, horse drawn chariots. The red-figure style has a black painted ground, while the figures are left unpainted. The result was the figures to be shown in the natural color of fired earth.
4. Roman portraiture was very detailed and the likenesses of the sculptures were a very close rendition of the real people they were modeled to. One highly influential invention of the Roman sculptors was the equestrian portrait. This style portrayed an admired leader on horseback. Many were a salute to the leaders of the American Revolution, the Civil War, and other conflicts.
5. The Mummy of Artemidoros has many cultural influences. The geometric style showing a funeral scene at the top with the foot soldiers below, the Red-figure style is simulated with a darkened base and the figures themselves are fiery gold color.
Thank you
